LABAN EFFORTS: AN ACTOR-MOVEMENT WORKSHOP with Vanessa Ewan

Workshop Dates:

  • Introductory Sessions: 26th & 27th March
  • Week One: 31st to 4th April
  • Week Two: 7th to 11th April
  • Concluding Sessions: 23rd to 25th April

Location: Swiss Cottage, London

Workshop Price: £350 per person (for 15 full days | Each day will run 10am-5pm)

Deadline for Application: 10th March

This is a unique opportunity to spend an intensive period of time with Vanessa Ewan exploring and embodying Laban’s Efforts of Action Drive. This workshop offers a complete step-by-step process, specifically developed for actors. It is a one-off chance to undertake this work in detail at a level which is not usually available outside of a full-time conservatoire training.

Laban is one of the key 20th Century theatre practitioners whose ground-breaking work revolutionised our understanding of the body in movement. The Efforts offer the actor an exciting and accessible route to develop their analytical eye and break down personal movement characteristics. The actor can then make active choices; expand their emotional and physical range; and increase their ability to create dynamic and contrasting characters.

Vanessa Ewan is a specialist in Actor-Movement, and one of the key exponents of Laban’s work within a theatre-specific context. She has lectured on the subject internationally as well as running an established ongoing laboratory-research into the Efforts of Action Drive. She is a Senior Lecturer at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, and also a movement consultant and choreographer for theatre, film and television. Ewan’s book Actor Movement: The Expression of the Physical Being will be published by Methuen Drama Books in 2014.

To apply (or for more info):

Email fallingspace.info@gmail.com with ‘Laban Workshop Application’ as the Subject Heading. Please include a short biog/link to CV and a brief one-paragraph expression of interest saying why you would like to undertake the workshop (please do not feel obliged to spend a lot of your time on this – it is simply so we get some idea of who you are and what your background is).

Please note:

- This workshop is being offered at the discount price of £350 for 15 full  days as it will be filmed as part of an ongoing research project into the Laban Efforts which will form the basis of a book to be published by Bloomsbury in 2015. Please email FALLING SPACE should you require more information on this before applying.
- This workshop is aimed at actors and applicants should consider performing to be the primary strand of their work/training.
- You must be able to attend all the specified dates in order to take part.
- Should you wish to apply for the workshop but are unable to meet the cost due to economic hardship, please email FALLING SPACE for more details on available scholarships.
